Fascinating Olomouc

Fascinating Olomouc

The Baroque—the stylistic period of the 17th and 18th centuries—can be encountered in Olomouc everywhere you go.
On the 2nd through the 4th of June, Olomouc will host its historical city festival, and this year, it is linked to the 300th anniversary of the birthday of Maria Theresa, the most important female ruler of the Czech lands. You can look forward to period craft fairs and markets, concerts by soloists from the Moravian Theatre and Moravian Philharmonic, theatre performances, as well as an evening procession in historical garb.
The most important monument is the baroque Holy Trinity Column. At 35 metres tall, it is the tallest sculpture group in the Czech Republic. Another important baroque site soars above the city atop Holy Hill: the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, with its beautifully decorated interiors. It is an important pilgrimage site that attracts countless pilgrims every year.
In addition of the basilica, Holy Hill is also the home of the Olomouc Zoo. It is famous primarily for its shark aquarium, the largest in the Czech Republic. It also boasts a lookout tower from which you can view the entire city.
If you decide to make your way to Olomouc, purchasing the Olomouc Card is certainly worth the expense.
